History of Mather & Smith Limited

Mather & Smith joined the M.J.Allen Group in 1996 bringing with them over a century and a half of foundry experience. Queen Anne Gate and Railings

The image depicts work that Mather and Smith undertook to a street in London.  Approximately five years ago Mather and Smith installed the Queen Anne railings and gate to one of the properties in Nightingale Square and the residents of the square decided due to the excellent workmanship to approach Mather and Smith to undertake work to a further  80% of the homes to enhance and improve the frontage of their properties and the square.

Primrose Hill, London Zoo - Bridge Restoration

Wallis construction awarded Mather and Smith the contract to supply and install new cast iron railings for a bridge located in London Zoo.

Mather and Smith Royal Opera House

Mather and Smith undertook restoration work to the Queens Entrance Canopy of the Royal Opera House, after the canopy was damaged by a high sided vehicle.

Peabody Groundworks and Restoration of Railings

Mather & Smith implemented the improvements with new paths and benches.  Mather & Smith undertook all groundworks utilising their own labour. The existing gates and steps leading down into  the garden were restored, as was the central plinth, which had been broken by overgrown tree roots. A new iron arch was designed to fit with the overall look of the garden and installed over the eastern entrance.

St.Johns Churchyard, Fulham, London

The restoration of the cast iron railings and gates for St.Johns Churchyard, Fulham have now been completed. The M.J.Allen Iron Foundry manufactured the replacement railing and gate components and Mather and Smith Limited undertook the installation of the cast iron work. The contract took six months to complete, all works were completed to the highest standard and the works came in within budget. The improvements were made to enhance the centre of Fulham and to create safe and attractive spaces within the borough.

Standard Traditional Cast Iron Railings

During World War II many cast iron railings were torn down for the war effort. Mather & Smith in conjuction with it's own Iron Foundry have a traditional range of cast iron railings which can return properties to their former glory.

Restoration of historical metal works, (Cast Iron and aluminium specialists with in house foundries); a fully functioning forge run by an experienced Black Smith; Gold leafing; steel fabrication/manufacture and repairs; a hard and soft landscaping service, all forms of bronze, lead and copper work including repairs and manufacture; all forms of wrought iron and forged works; diamond core drilling and sawing; fitting of new stone work (coping stones/piers etc); Cold metal stitching. We are CHAS accredited and are registered with Construction line. Our operatives are NRSWA certified, CSCS carded, CPCS carded and blue carded for the water industry.

St Johns Church Bethnal Green

Mather & Smith were made the main contractor for the restoration of the wrought iron railings and the stone work at St Johns church, Bethnal Green. Work started on the restoration of the railings and stone work in late February 2009 and was completed in August 2009. The works were part funded by English Heritage and donations from local people.
